Makiling’s 10th Anniversary Gig at Penguin Cafe

Posted by Master Diwa on Sep 21, 2007

I arrived at Penguin earlier than usual that night. At first I thought I was the first from the band to arrive. But I saw Wed’s gear as soon as I got inside the bar. I placed my stuff onstage and sat down to relax a little. I looked around. There were only a handful of guests. I was uneasy. It was always a fear of mine that maybe none would come to see our gig. And believe it or not, we’ve done gigs in the past where not even one guest came. But then again, it was still only 8pm. Regulars at Penguin usually arrive past 10.

It was a private party of old expats and there were a bunch of female “entertainers” swarming the mansion ready to “serve” the expats. I also remember having a gig were we became some sort of pied pipers and paraded with children at an area of Fort Bonifacio.

Now here is a project with Japan Foundation Manila Office (JFMO), in which we will compose and perform a live soundtrack for an old Japanese silent film, “A Monster Serpent/Orochi”.

It was past 10pm already and the band was nowhere in sight at Xaymaca. The crowd is lively and guests keep on arriving. It was a relatively full house. And where was the band? Still practicing at Otto’s house!

We’ve been together as a band for ten years. That’s a decade man! But tonight, something was different. We were all nervous. We are so used to playing gigs but this nervousness was a bit different. Was it because it was a special night? Were we afraid to make a mistake on our songs on a gig that would summarize what weve been doing for ten years? I don’t know why exactly, but there it was: butterflies in our stomach.
